Heineken is running phone-free parties. That's not a gimmick, that's a read on the market.

57% of consumers say they'd feel lost without internet access. 32% cite significant daily stress from being online.

That's not a contradiction. That's a market.

Heineken's "Social Off Socials" campaign has been pushing phone-free, in-person socialising since last year. Read it as a stunt if you like, but Euromonitor's 2026 work puts it in a bigger pattern: consumers moving from constant connection toward selective engagement. Quieter rooms. Smaller groups. Fewer feeds.

Meanwhile over 55% of consumers now prioritise experience-based spending, and 22% expect to increase what they spend on unique experiences this year.

Put those together and you get the most interesting brief in marketing right now: build something people want to be inside, not something they want to post.

The case FOR the phone-free, community-first activation:

  • Undivided attention is now genuinely scarce, which makes it genuinely valuable

  • It reads as respect. You're hosting your guests, not harvesting content from them

  • 49% of consumers place importance on active community involvement. A room is the most literal way to deliver it

The case AGAINST:

  • You just deleted your measurement. No content, no reach numbers, no easy report for the CFO

  • It doesn't scale. 200 people had a beautiful night and 200 people is the number

  • Real risk of preachiness. Nobody wants a beer brand lecturing them about screen time

  • And you're switching off free distribution — attendees make content at events, and that content travels further than the room does

Where we land: don't ban the phone. Design a reason to forget it.

The strongest activations we've seen this year confiscated nothing. They built a moment good enough that people stopped reaching. And the photos that did come out were better, because they were of something real.

The measurement problem is solvable — brand lift, code redemption, a follow-up survey, repeat purchase against a matched holdout. Harder than screenshotting an impressions dashboard. Also more honest.

Been to a brand event in the last year you didn't post about — and liked more for it? We'd love to know which one.

Notes on the data

Worth noting the campaign launched in the US in May 2025 and rolled out globally — so this isn't a one-off stunt, it's a sustained platform. Which tells you how much conviction Heineken has in the insight.
