76% of TikTok creators get under 1,000 views a post. The algorithm isn't broken — it's full.
76% of TikTok creators get fewer than 1,000 views per post. On Instagram it's 46.2%.
Those numbers come from HypeAuditor's analysis of five million accounts, and they explain roughly 90% of the "the algorithm hates me" posts I see every week.
The algorithm doesn't hate you. There is simply more content than there is attention, and the gap is widening every quarter as generation gets cheaper.
This is the part nobody wants to say out loud: reach was never a right. It was an early-platform subsidy, and the subsidy is over.
The case FOR staying in the volume game:
Distribution is still free, which is historically insane. No other medium has ever offered that
One post can still change a business. The lottery has terrible odds and enormous payouts
Consistency does compound — the accounts above 1K views mostly got there by posting through the flat part
The case AGAINST:
66% of people say they're more selective about what they engage with than a year ago. You're competing for a shrinking pool of willing attention
Posting more into a saturated feed mostly produces more invisible posts and more burnout
Chasing reach optimises for the wrong metric. 1,000 views from the wrong people is worth less than 40 from the right ones
Where I land: stop measuring reach and start measuring recall.
The question isn't how many people saw it. It's whether anybody could describe what you're about a week later. That's a much harder metric and a much better one.
Practically, that means fewer posts with sharper positions. It means owning a lane narrow enough that people know when to tag you. And it means building somewhere you can reach people without permission — email, a community, a phone number, an actual relationship.
The creators and brands who'll be fine in three years aren't the ones with the best reach. They're the ones with an audience that would follow them to a different platform tomorrow.
Real question: what's your ratio of posts that flopped to posts that worked this year? Mine is uglier than my highlight reel suggests, and I think everyone's is.
Notes on the data
The two numbers belong together: 76% of TikTok creators under 1,000 views, and 66% of people saying they're more selective than a year ago.
Supply went infinite. Willingness to watch went down. Both at once.
